Multilingual Author Visits Newcomers at Way Elementary
Grade 5 students in English Language Development Teacher Deyar Nasiri’s Newcomer’s class participated in a unique event to meet multilingual author Saadia Faruqi. During the virtual meeting, the author and students engaged in discussion about her latest book titled, "Saving Sunshine", which explores essential topics such as resilience, friendship, and understanding different cultures, topics that resonated deeply with the students in Nasiri’s class. This event was made possible by a generous sponsorship from Oakland Schools.
Prior to the meeting, Nasiri read "Saving Sunshine" with students during their lunch period. The students were engaged by the book’s themes, which they found relatable and inspiring. The book's characters and storyline provided a platform for meaningful discussions, and the students could connect their experiences to those of the characters.
The interaction with Faruqi was a highlight. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the author’s writing process and the inspirations behind her story. It was a rewarding experience that encouraged a deeper appreciation for literature.
