Apple Crunch Day at Way Elementary

Apple Crunch Day at Way Elementary

The sound of the CRUNCH could be heard throughout the cafetorium as Way students took their first bite to celebrate Apple Crunch Day. The Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day promotes healthy eating and supports initiatives that connect farm to school and local food purchasing throughout the region. It also offers a fun opportunity to integrate food and agriculture into classroom subjects – ranging from science to art and beyond!

Hosted by MSU Extension and the Michigan Farm to Institution Network and facilitated by Bloomfield Hills School District Food Service Coordinator, Marianne Romsek, four varieties of Michigan-grown apples were offered: Ambrosia, Crimson Crisp, Gala, and Fuji. Students chose an apple on their way into lunch and prepared for the great crunch together. Excitement filled the air as students bit into their apples, the satisfying crunch echoing through the space, turning the event into a joyful celebration of local produce and healthy eating. Romsek smiled as she watched the students, knowing that moments like these help foster a lifelong appreciation for nutritious foods. It was an event that not only nourished their bodies, but also their minds and spirits, creating a sense of community and connection to local produce from Michigan.
