BHS Students Selected for the 2026 Michigan All-State Bands and Orchestras

Congratulations to the following BHS students who have been selected to perform in the 2026 Michigan School Band and Orchestra All-State Ensembles:

  • Derek Han (grade 11, BHHS) - Principal Cello, HS Orchestra
  • Casey Knas (grade 12, BHHS) - Trumpet, HS Jazz Ensemble
  • SongHyeon Lee (grade 8, SHMS) - Principal Violin, MS Orchestra
  • Evan Smith (grade 11, BHHS) - Clarinet, HS Band
  • Jacob Strutt (grade 12, BHHS) - Baritone Saxophone, HS Jazz Ensemble
  • Lucy Wu (grade 8, NHMS) - Cello, MS Orchestra

Congratulations to the following BHS students who received 2026 MSBOA Honorable Mentions:

  • Grace Berakovich (grade 9, BHHS) - Bass Clarinet, HS Band
  • Sarah Drozd (grade 8, NHMS) - Trumpet, MS Band
  • Finley Koh (grade 8, SHMS) - Flute, MS Band

These students have been selected among the finest musicians in the state, through a blind audition process. An average of 2,500 students audition each year for the 400 seats in five ensembles: Middle School String Orchestra, Middle School Band, High School Full Orchestra, High School Band, and High School Jazz Ensemble. After two and a half days of rehearsal, the musicians will perform on Saturday, January 24, 2026 in the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids as part of the 21st Annual Michigan Music Conference. The MMC is a conference for all music teachers (instrumental, vocal, and general music) in the state.  

The MSBOA All-State program was established in the 2005-06 school year by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.  MSBOA has been serving the instrumental music teachers and students of Michigan for over 80 years. They proudly represent over 1,200 public, parochial, and private schools, and over 1,600 instrumental music teachers. MSBOA continues to follow the mission of our founders to provide quality musical experiences for the students of our member schools.

Congratulations to the students on this exceptional honor and achievement. We are proud to have them represent Bloomfield Hills High School, North Hills Middle School, and South Hills Middle School.
