Balloons Over Broadway at Conant Elementary

Balloons Over Broadway at Conant Elementary

Observing festive balloons during the Thanksgiving Day Parade is a cherished tradition. Families come together bundled in cozy coats and scarves, or they gather around the television to enjoy the colorful spectacle as it floats through the city streets. Each balloon, whether it's a beloved cartoon character or a brand-new design, brings joy and excitement to the crowds below. Children smile while adults reminisce about parades from years past.

Second-grade students at Conant Elementary created their very own balloon parade with the assistance of their fourth-grade buddies. Each student designed and crafted colorful balloon floats using vibrant paper, markers, and tape. The classroom was transformed into a room full of laughter and excitement as the students proudly showcased their handmade creations, each balloon an example of their creativity and imagination.

This project was inspired by the nonfiction book "Balloons Over Broadway,” by Melissa Sweet, which tells the story of Tony Sarg, the creator of the original Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade balloons. It highlights how Sarg’s innovative approach to incorporating movement and motion evolved into the spectacular parade we know today. The lessons learned from his growth mindset and flexibility to ever-changing needs created something bigger than ever, and something that is still part of our lives today.

This annual classroom event fosters artistic expression and encourages collaboration and community spirit. For many students, it becomes a cherished memory. Inspired by Tony Sarg's legacy, these young creators are reminded that with imagination and determination, they too can bring their dreams to life in wonderful ways!
